Carbon Footprint

The reasons why a carbon footprint calculation is needed will determine the most appropriate calculation method.

In some cases, it is sufficient to get a baseline footprint value using our free carbon footprint calculator.

Why do we calculate our carbon footprint?

There are usually two main reasons:

  • We want to monitor our carbon footprint and reduce it from time to time.
  • We want to accurately communicate our carbon footprint to our stakeholders.

Calculating the carbon footprint to reduce it later
Calculating the carbon footprint of an organisation can be a useful tool to complement or even integrate existing energy and environmental measures.
If the main reason for the calculation is the intention to reduce, it is usually sufficient to identify the main emission sources and quantify the emissions. This process is straightforward and relatively quick. The main emission sources are usually gas and electricity consumption and supply and export.
After quantifying emissions, we can then formulate and prioritise options for reduction. The focus should be on areas where the greatest savings can be made.

Carbon footprint calculation for accurate communication
Recently, more and more organisations are calculating their carbon footprint in detail, with a view to publishing it later:

  • Used for CSR or marketing purposes,
  • meet the needs of their stakeholders,
  • identify the emissions they need to neutralise to be „climate neutral”.

For these purposes, a more complex calculation is required, taking into account all the emissions that result from the operation of the organisation. Such a calculation should be accredited by an independent third party. Accreditation ensures that the calculation method has been used correctly and that the results are accurate. OurOffset and Crowe, an A+ rated company, can ensure excellence in this.
